Shannon L. Aider once said, “One of the most important things in this planet is to let others know that they are never alone”.
This is something that I strongly believe in! And, this has always been the cornerstone behind my volunteering experiences. My journey into the world of information technology, IT Project Management and Digital Marketing was always filled with ups and downs, successes and challenges, along with oodles of learnings. However, going through it was easy with the organizations and ideas I was working upon. For a year, I served at the ICT Club as a president and at the LEO club as a secretary. And, I also worked as the professional development director at the Rotaract Club of Colombo. May would term these as inert roles, however, these were places that taught me the most.
Much of my professional project management skills were fine-tuned and boosted at the Rotaract Club of Colombo (Midcity). Here, I had to work with fellow rotaractors, who were within the country and abroad. Initiating an effective communication channel was always a challenge. For me, this was a project that tested all my entrepreneurship and technical skills directly. Some of my crucial projects at the Rotaract were with other clubs from different parts of the world. This exposure helped me exchange ideas and craft a great career plan for myself. Working with people from all over the planet was a once in a lifetime experience for me.
The AIESEC Experience
Moving on, I decided to take part as an exchange participant at AIESEC, National University Malaysia. This was definitely a one of a kind program for me. It gave me the platform to interact with students from more than 20 countries. My experience at the Rotaract Club helped me accomplish my role at the AIESEC in ease. Here, I stay at Malaysia for two whole months during which kids were assisted in nurturing their IT skills and knowledge. To add more challenge to the stay, I had to prepare for a speak up on empowerment.
Volunteering project with AIESEC Malaysia
My project at the AIESEC was rather an intuitive and an impactful one. I chose to help students improve their language skills, and thus get a better exposure to information technology. Various workshops and initiatives were organized to help the students gain proficiency in the language. My ideas and creative project management skills were recognized. I was able to express my deepest thoughts and establish a good bond with the participants. Indeed, AIESEC was a game change for me. It helped me value my role in this industry. Also, it gave more light to the chosen path of Digital Marketing and IT Project Management. After all, who wouldn’t want to be motivated in their journey?
Technical Assets
Much of my community service and volunteering was supported by my technical and non-technical skills. These skills played a crucial role in getting people together, planning projects and executing strategies like a true professional. Of course, my skills as a UI/UX designer helped me put forward all my ideas in an intuitive manner! I was able to climb up the leadership opportunities and present myself a budding entrepreneur everywhere.
